Rocky Romero discusses NJPW's decision to introduce the NJPW STRONG Women's Championship.
As previously announced, New Japan Pro-Wrestling will crown the inaugural NJPW STRONG Women's Champion at NJPW Resurgence; Mercedes Mone, Stephanie Vaquer, Willow Nightingale, and Momo Kohgo will compete in a one-night tournament for the gold. The announcement has been the center of some controversy, as some critics have wondered why NJPW is introducing another women's title less than a year after the first IWGP Women's Champion was crowned.
Speaking on Comedy Store Wrestling, Romero addressed the controversy surrounding the new title and noted that he doesn't understand where it's coming from.
"The first-ever STRONG Women’s Championship, which is like an American championship. I’ve been reading the boards and Twitter and people talking about this and it’s been controversial in the fact, ‘Why is New Japan making another women’s championship.’ It seems like everyone was complaining two years ago that there wasn’t a championship, there wasn’t a division, ‘where is the representation?’ Now, we’ve got two championships, one headline in Japan and now the STRONG Women’s Championship. We’re trying to give women that representation and give them a great place to show professional wrestling. I don’t really understand where all the controversy is coming from," Romero said.
In the same interview, Romero stated that he would love to see Shinsuke Nakamura return to NJPW. Click here to see what he had to say.
