'Stone Cold' Steve Austin discusses his presence in WWE video games and how they've allowed him to stay in the public eye.
Throughout his career in the professional wrestling business, Steve Austin has been present in more than 40 WWE games, both mobile and console. Austin first appeared in as a playable character in a video game in the WCW Main Event video game, which was released in 1993 on the Game Boy. Most recently, Austin appeared in the WWE 2K23 game that was released in March 2023.
In a new interview with Ryan Satin, Austin noted that it has been really cool to be featured on the cover of multiple wrestling games throughout history.
"It was War Zone, the one with my arms up in the air [on the cover]," Steve Austin said regarding the first time he remembers seeing himself playable in a game. "When you are a punk ass kid growing up in South Texas, you never expect you're going to be on the cover of a video game and you know, A&E did a Biography on me. I told them, I said, 'Dude, at the end of the day, I'm just a dude from Edna. I'm still that guy.' so yeah, to see myself on the cover of a video game and to be on a couple of the 2K Games, that's a blast. I never envisioned it in a million years. Does it mean something to me? Absolutely."
Furthermore, "The Texas Rattlesnake" credited his continued inclusion in video games with keeping him relevant, saying that more people probably know him from his inclusion in video games than his days in the ring now that he has been retired for 20 years.
"Well, all these years later, when I retired in '03, the video games and the WWE Network, I'm still as -- people recognize me as much now than they used to when I was on fire, due to the video games and do to all that stuff. So it's really helped me a lot.
