Swerve Strickland: 'I See Myself As A History Maker'

Swerve Strickland talks making history.

Swerve is on a roll as of late in All Elite Wrestling since defeating Hangman Adam Page in a Texas Deathmatch at AEW Full Gear last month. Since then, he has gone 2-0 in the AEW Continental Classic, defeating Jay Lethal in his first bout, while most recently knocking off Jay White on the November 29th edition of AEW Dynamite.

One goal that Strickland has repeatedly discussed is wanting to become the first ever black AEW World Champion, and believes that the AEW audience are on board.

While speaking to Chris Van Vliet on Insight, Strickland noted that he still wants to become the first black world champion and make history as a result.

"I would like to be the first black AEW World Champion, I could make history. That's where I see myself, as a history maker. I truly believe I can. And now as the talk is getting louder weekly, like like this past Wednesday, I didn't even say anything and people are still shouting it even louder. I just emoted and stuff and reacted to someone saying really horrible things and speaking the truth about me, kind of flipping the mirror back to me from Hangman and like the cool thing about the inverse of that is like how me and hangman started. It was me berating him for like, five to six minutes, which started this whole thing and I was flipped back to like I'm being berated. I don't get a word in, but he's taking the opportunity to do this. Me? I'm like, no, you're not saying anything. I'm taking this. You've been talking enough." he said.

Strickland may want to capture the AEW World Title, but Samoa Joe is currently set to challenge for the title next at AEW Worlds End as he looks to take the championship away from MJF.

Swerve sits on top of the Gold League in the AEW Continental Classic alongside Jon Moxley, with both competitors sitting on two wins and six points. You can read the full standings for the tournament so far here.
