Throughout my career I've had many opportunities to learn from some incredible veterans in this business. The intrinsic value they provide to talent, careers, and overall experience in the business, and mindset are simply put - immeasurable. To the right talents who are open to learning and find themselves deserving of said opportunities, the right kind of veteran who is wanting to teach is a rare element that's pivotal in the wrestling recipe for success…
In my opinion as a woman in wrestling, high quality veterans are invaluable to the wrestling industry and if you're lucky enough to learn from one or more that have achieved high accolades in this business then you'd better jump on it.There's so many schools out there that just take money and teach moves. Very few teach how to work on TV, character development, promo skills, business 101, psychology of a match, how to get where you want go contract-wise, and the psychology of putting a card together. Seldom do schools teach paying your dues. Yes certain practices may be outdated, but veterans like Jerry Lynn, Mercedes Martinez, Princess Victoria, Al Snow, Tom Prichard, Xtreme Tiger, and more are a particular asset to any lucky enough to learn from them. One such world traveled veteran star is none other than SuperMex Hernandez!
Over the last few years I've had an impeccable experience getting to work alongside and learn from Hernandez at Lucha Patron. I have seen first-hand what tutelage from Hernandez and others can do for not just up-and-coming talents but also talents that feel stuck like trees with roots stuck in the ground and just not going anywhere. Having someone like Hernandez in your corner, a veteran who has traveled the world multiple times with wrestling, using his experience and notoriety to lift you up both figuratively and sometimes literally can be an enlightening experience that can change a talent's trajectory.
From IMPACT to NWA and AAA Mexico, Europe and more Hernandez has been an influential figure working with some of the best this business has to offer and it's absolutely awesome to see what someone like him contributes to not just a show but also a locker room. There's a standard you're expected to rise to, adhere to, and perform with. The business is better with veterans like Hernandez. While yes they are few and far between veterans who are willing and eager to lend a hand to deserving talents with the right attitudes are worth learning from as that will ultimately help this business to continue into the future with what I hope will be the passing on of good work ethics, psychology of wrestling, TV knowledge, etiquette, business 101, mental toughness, and of course the art of it all.
I've always hated that "you still got it" chant, I mean, if you really think someone has such a level of innate talent then there's no way they would have lost it?! Right? And Hernandez is a star who definitely never lost it. He's made a living in this business which is what many set out to do and rarely achieve to a liveable extent. There's a wisdom in that that most cannot teach because they've never done it. Some step on others to succeed. Or take advantage of others to succeed. And then there's veterans like Hernandez. The ones that can teach from experience. The ones that can preach because they know better, because they've seen it. And those who don't need to take advantage because they have their own notoriety and buzz to work off of…
After all is said and done, in my opinion, Hernandez is even better for being able to transition and traverse the different times in the wrestling industry. All while helping those who seek to learn from him respectfully as they should. He's trained several stars currently on the circuit and has done an incredible job with many at Lucha Patron including myself. Hernandez is a very rare veteran who is a credit to any show or locker room or student looking for a teacher and school. We need more veterans like him…
