Tony Khan was surprised to see William Regal released from WWE, but is more than happy to have him involved in All Elite Wrestling.
William Regal, in the not-so-distant past, was a huge part of WWE NXT. As the on-screen general manager for years, William Regal was the authority on television for the brand and behind the scenes, he worked closely with Shawn Michaels and Triple H to help build the future of WWE.
Triple H was once quoted as saying that William Regal would be a part of that system for as long as he wanted to be.
Regal was released from WWE as part of I'm going shake-ups at that company but he made his AEW debut at Revolution getting physical with both Jon Moxley and Bryan Danielson in order to get them to cool down after their match against one another.
Speaking on the post-show media scrum, Tony Khan said that he was very surprised to see that William Regal was even released from WWE, to begin with, but now that he has access to him, he was very eager to bring him on board.
"It was very surprising to see he had been released and would be available," Tony explained. "I have tons of respect for his mind and I think he's going to be a very valuable person in AEW. Obviously, people who follow his career closely know that he has a very long-established connection with Bryan Danielson and was instrumental in shaping the pro wrestler that Danielson has become and he is one of the greatest pro wrestlers today and all time. Regal had a big contribution to that. When he was released, I was very surprised, but also eager to bring him here."
Tony further built on the storyline that we saw play out on screen saying that he can see William Regal’s impact being felt in a major way on screen because of his past history with Bryan Danielson and Jon Moxley. However, Tony is also looking forward to having William Regal and his expertise behind the scenes.
"I think he can contribute on-screen in a major way to Danielson and he has a history with Jon Moxley. Some of the last matches we saw Regal wrestle were against Moxley and they had a great rivalry. He's very familiar with both men and they have a lot of respect for him. We say that after the violence and the way they bled together. They built a lot of mutual respect with each other and that's very exciting. Also, behind the scenes, I think Regal can teach all of us a lot and it's great to have him here, on-screen and off-screen. It came together very recently and he fits very well with what we're doing," Tony said.
