In 2003, Triple H (Paul Levesque) and Stephanie McMahon were married in real life after being involved romantically on-screen, beginning with a wedding against Stephanie's will on an episode of WWE Raw in 1999.
Seeing as Triple H and Stephanie were together on-screen, Vince McMahon thought he could use their real life relationship to benefit the WWE audience.
"As it's moving forward, there are moments in time where it's Vince, and he's Vince McMahon-ing this, like, even as we're looking for locations for the wedding at one point, he seriously suggests to us holding it on pay-per-view," Triple H recalled on "Mr. McMahon."
Vince said, "So, what if Stephanie and Paul's wedding was live on pay-per-view? Wow. People would buy that. It'd be awesome. It'd be great. Steph said, 'Uh...no.'"
Triple H revealed that Vince thought Stephanie was selfish for her decision.
"When Steph says, 'Absolutely not,' he's like, 'Selfish. I can't believe you're selfish.' Then Vince books Vince versus Steph, in I believe a street fight, six days before our legitimate wedding," said Triple H.
The "I Quit" match between Vince and Stephanie took place at WWE No Mercy 2003.
"I remember my mom actually threatening my dad that if I had a black eye or a broken ankle for my wedding that she would divorce him on the spot. Needless to say, I had no black eye. I had no broken ankle. I may have gotten choked out in the match, but that's different," said Stephanie.
Vince was victorious in the match and Stephanie was off television for two years.

Janel Grant, a former WWE employee, filed a lawsuit in January against Vince McMahon, WWE, and John Laurinaitis. The lawsuit accuses McMahon of sexual assault and sex trafficking. On May 30, Grant agreed to pause the lawsuit for six months while the federal investigation continued against McMahon, who resigned from TKO/WWE following the lawsuit being filed.
