The Undertaker reflects on his vaunted WrestleMania streak and different pitches through the years for those who could have had the honor of breaking the streak.
Brock Lesnar did the unthinkable and became the first Superstar to defeat Undertaker at WrestleMania in 2014. Up until that moment, the idea of the Undertaker losing at WrestleMania seemed like a fever dream. However, several pitches were made through the years for him to lose his streak before the match with Brock Lesnar came along at WrestleMania XXX.
Speaking with Ariel Helwani, The Undertaker revealed that at one point, Vince McMahon thought that Vladimir Kozlov could be the guy to break the streak. He also spoke about his WrestleMania 24 opponent, Edge, flat-out refusing to break the streak despite being offered.
"Never that got to me," Undertaker said about hearing any definite ideas about him losing at WrestleMania before 2014. "By the time that we got to WrestleMania, it was pretty much known what was going to go down, but yeah, there were a few people, I guess, that he wanted to break the streak.
"Kozlov. He wanted Kozlov," Undertaker continued. "It was early on [in Vladimir Kozlov's career]. I think he wanted Edge. Edge refused."
When explaining why he believes Edge refused to take the victory in their WWE World Heavyweight Championship match at WrestleMania 24, Undertaker cited the respect that Edge has for the industry.
"That's how much he respected the streak, and me, and what he thought that streak meant to the business. I didn't know what at the time. No, I didn't know that till years after," Taker said. "That just says a lot about the human being he is. Edge grasped how important the streak had become, and he just didn't. He said, 'I don't want that. I don't think it's the right thing,' and he just didn't. He said No."
Undertaker would go on to reiterate past comments and say that he does not believe Brock Lesnar needed to break the streak.
In the past, Undertaker has stated that he wishes someone like Roman Reigns could have broken the streak. Read his comments about that here.
