Things are looking up for Jon Jones. Well, sort of.
Jones, who missed out on millions of dollars when he was pulled from his UFC 200 Undisputed Light Heavyweight Championship main event with Daniel Cormier, could be back in the cage sooner than expected. Jones had failed an out-of-competition United States Anti-Doping Agency test in June for the estrogen blocker clomiphene, but maintained his innocence. Even UFC President Dana White thinks Jones may have been unfairly persecuted, and said as much while speaking to Jim Rome on CBS Radio Tuesday.
"I don't even know if this is public. I didn't know if I can talk about it. Normally, I talk about anything, but when it comes to medical stuff, you can't do it. It looks like Jon Jones did not take the supplement everyone thought he took," White said. "It’s in other things. If that’s true & that’s what USADA & the Nevada State Athletic Commission say happened, it could look good for Jon Jones."
Jones turned heads when he mentioned Sunday night that he had some 'good news' in an Instagram post.
"I'm sure you guys are curious about this USADA situation. Obviously, I can't get into it because it's still pending, but what I can say is we have found out lots of really good news, and I'm expecting to be back in the Octagon really soon," said Jones.
Jones was temporarily suspended and is awaiting another hearing from the NAC. White doesn't think that Jones disclosed the substances that he took, which resulted in the failure.
"He didn't get a bum wrap. He definitely didn't get a bum wrap, but the substance that he was on, it was a pill that you take when you're coming off of steroids. But this thing is apparently in other things. Jon took something else. Where he doesn't come off clean is you have to tell USADA everything that you put in your body leading up to the fight and he did not," White said.
White didn't elaborate much more on the issue, as it is of the medical variety, and noted that he'd rather let the legal process play out.
"I'll let this thing play out and if that's true and that's what USADA and the Nevada State Athletic Commission say happened, it could look good for Jon Jones," said White.
