Emma, Summer Rae and Darren Young have been released by the WWE.
WWE posted the following on their official website Sunday morning:
WWE has come to terms on the releases of WWE Superstars Emma, Darren Young and Summer Rae.
WWE wishes them the best in all of their future endeavors.
Since Summerslam, Emma has had arguably the most prolific main roster run of her career. She defeated Mickie James, competed in a Raw Women's Championship match at WWE No Mercy, and later won a fatal 5-way match for the right to square off against the debuting Asuka. She'd then go on to have two competitive matches with the former NXT Champion.
Emma is often credited for helping start the "women's revolution" in WWE, dating back to her NXT Arrival match in February 2014 with Paige. She would have impressive runs in NXT, but often saw her main roster career derailed due to injuries. She would never capture any championships in WWE.
With the independent landscape as is, Emma will have plenty of options in the future. Before signing with WWE, Emma worked for the likes of Shimmer, ECCW, SPW, PWAQ, WrestleRock, PWE, CNWA and others, so she's no stranger to the indie scene.
This isn't the first time Emma has been released. After an incident that led to her doing community service, WWE briefly released her in 2014. According to Emma's lawyer, she forgot to pay for an iPad case when using a self checkout at a Walmart in Hartford, Connecticut.
Summer Rae has been out of WWE action for well over a year. She last appeared on an August 2016 set of live events, but had been off WWE TV since July of that year. She showed up as a "shadow" in an episode of Breezango's Fashion Files, but never returned to WWE television to compete after being cleared from a neck injury.
Darren Young is a former WWE Tag Team Champion who is perhaps more known for coming out as being the first openly gay WWE wrestler. Young sustained an injury early this year and came back to the ring for WWE live events, but never worked TV after. He was doing PR work for WWE at the Los Angeles Clippers game Saturday night.
Fightful is working to learn the reason for the releases, but were told more could be on the way.
