The recent announcement of the MMA Athletes Association has already sent social media ablaze with reactions.
While not exactly a union, the association aims to focus on the supposed massive gap between the UFC’s revenue shares with fighters, of which Bjorn Rebney, one of the founding members of the association, claimed to be at 8 percent, compared to other sports.
UFC Fighters are independent contractors and so trying to unionize would only result in a long and drawn out battle with the UFC and its owners that would likely take years to conclude, but Rebney teased the idea of a potential labor strike in the press conference.

Not all fighters are on board, however. There are some people, who may not necessarily agree with the ones leading the charge.
Rebney, Donald Cerrone, Tim Kennedy, TJ Dillashaw and Cain Velasquez all announced the formation of the MMAAA on a massively advertised press conference on Wednesday. Rebney specified that CAA (WME-IMG rivals) is not supporting the MMAAA itself, but they're supporting the athletes, because that's their job as a talent agency. In the press conference, Rebney said WME-IMG, who are the new UFC owners, should have flown all of the fighters in and apologized in regards to how they were treated.
