Jon Jones became the UFC Light Heavyweight Champion for a second time when he defeated Daniel Cormier by third round knockout in the main event of UFC 214.
Despite the fact that Jones has won both of his fights against Cormier, the champion says their is a possibility for a third fight between them.
“I think Daniel is proud of himself for what he’s been able to accomplish. He should have his head high,” Jones said to MMA Junkie. “At this point, I don’t think it’s much of a debate where he stands in this sport when it comes to me and him. I think it’s a closed chapter. With that being said, I do think he has every right to be proud of his career, and his career’s not over yet. We never know. There could be a Jones-Cormier 3. I know that’s a strong possibility. I know he’s going to be a very hard guy to beat for these other guys. I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if I saw him again maybe a year or two from now.”
Jones earned the first win over Cormier by unanimous decision at UFC 182.
The light heavyweight kingpin has also spoken out against the controversial post-fight interview with Cormier, but he also says it was a real moment for DC and the MMA fans.
“Even if he’s fresh off a knockout they just want to see how he feels and where he was at. The UFC slogan is ‘as real as it gets.’ It was a very real moment, a moment that I appreciated and I’m sure all the fans appreciated, even though it probably wasn’t the best moment for Daniel,” says Jones.
It is rare for a fighter in the UFC that holds a 2-0 lead over another fighter to meet for a third time in the promotion. The only other instance that it has happened thus far in the promotion was between Tito Ortiz and Ken Shamrock (UFC 40, UFC 61 & UFC Fight Night 6.5), all three of those fights were won by Ortiz.
