UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion Amanda Nunes is defending her gold against Valentina Shevchenko this July at UFC 213.
Nunes has made proclamations in the past about challenging for the UFC Women’s Featherweight Title down the line, a title currently held by Germaine De Randamie.
There has never been a two division female UFC champion before and according to Nunes, it’s a two woman race to see who makes UFC history first.
"I'm really glad that the UFC is embracing female MMA like that,” Nunes said to Combate. “I think this women’s flyweight division will be a huge success. It'll give another chance to girls who have a hard time dropping to strawweight, so it'll be good for them to fight at 125. And now we'll see who makes history first as the first two-division champion, me or Joanna Jedrzejczyk.”
Jedrzejczyk recently defended her women’s strawweight title against Jessica Andrade at UFC 211 and has also made waves about competing for the newly created UFC Women’s Flyweight Title.
The first ever UFC Women’s Flyweight Champion is going to be crowned at the UFC Ultimate Fighter 26 Finale.
UFC 213 takes place on Saturday, July 8 from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada with no main event announced at this time. Fightful is providing live coverage of the event, with a post-show podcast to follow.
