A UFC Women’s Bantamweight Title fight is heading to the UFC 224 card as the UFC confirmed a month-old report by Damon Martin as champion Amanda Nunes defends against #3 Raquel Pennington.
Nunes (15-4-0) will make the third defense of her championship, having previously defended it against former champion Ronda Rousey and Valentina Shevchenko. Nunes won the championship back at UFC 200 when she earned a first round submission win over Miesha Tate. Nunes hasn’t suffered a defeat in over three years and that last loss came to Cat Zingano at UFC 178.
Pennington (9-5-0) enters the contest on the strength of a four fight winning streak and it has been three-plus years since the last time she lost a bout. Pennington also returns to action for the first time in over a year, as her last bout came against former UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion Miesha Tate at UFC 205. Pennington also competed on the UFC Ultimate Fighter 18, making it to the semi-finals before losing to Jessica Rakoczy by unanimous decision.
UFC 224 takes place on Saturday, May 12 from the Jeunesse Arena in Rio De Janiero, Brazil. Fightful is providing live coverage of the event, with a post-show podcast to follow.
