MMA

A bout for the vacant UFC Interim Welterweight Title, first reported by Chris Taylor of BJ Penn.com, is added to UFC 225 as #2 Rafael Dos Anjos faces #3 Colby Covington.

Dos Anjos (28-9-0) has been undefeated thus far since moving up to the welterweight division, last defeating former UFC Welterweight Champion Robbie Lawler at UFC On Fox 26. Dos Anjos is also a former UFC Lightweight Champion, defeating Anthony Pettis by decision at UFC 185 to win the gold. If Dos Anjos were to win the strap against Covington, it would make him one of a handful of fighters to hold two belts in two different weight classes.

Covington (13-1-0) enters the contest on the strength of a five fight winning streak and the fighter hasn’t suffered a loss in over two years. Covington has fought twice before in the country of Brazil, defeating the duo of Damien Maia and Wagner Silva Gomes. Covington has also seen his last three UFC bouts go the distance and it has been almost two years since the fighter got a finish.

UFC 225 takes place on Saturday, Saturday, June 9 from the United Center in Chicago, Illinois with Robert Whittaker and Yoel Romero headlining. Fightful is providing live coverage of the event, with a post-show podcast to follow.
