Dana White Says Colby Covington Gets Title Shot With Win At UFC Newark

UFC Interim Welterweight Champion Colby Covington and former UFC Welterweight Champion Robbie Lawler will headline UFC Fight Night Newark

Dana White says that if Covington is able to defeat Lawler, a shot at the UFC Welterweight Title is going to be next.

“Covington is next in line, and he stepped up, he took this Lawler fight, and he’ll get the (title fight),” White said at the UFC 240 post-fight press conference (via Farah Hannoun of MMA Junkie).

Kamaru Usman is the current UFC Welterweight Champion and hasn’t defended the title since winning it at UFC 235

Jorge Masvidal is also a top contender to the UFC Welterweight Title, but White is thinking of matching him up with longtime rival Leon Edwards.

“Yeah, that’s definitely a good fight to make,” White said. “Question is, where do you do that fight and how much security are we going to have? Welterweight division is ridiculous right now – stacked with talent and stacked with unbelievable fights, impossibilities.”

UFC Fight Night Newark takes place on Saturday, August 3 from the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey with Colby Covington and Robbie Lawler headlining. Fightful is providing live coverage of the event, which airs live on ESPN.
