Aljamain Sterling will finally get his UFC bantamweight title shot.
UFC President Dana White confirmed Sterling (no. 2) will be the next challenge for Petr Yan's UFC bantamweight championship. He made the statement at the UFC Fight Night: Munhoz vs. Edgar post-fight press conference.
When asked if it is "safe to say that Aljamain Sterling is next in line for the title shot against Petr Yan," White simply said, "Yeah."
Frankie Edgar made good on his bantamweight debut by defeating Pedro Munhoz in a tight split decision. White was impressed but he is not prepared to call Edgar the number one contender at 135.
"I don't know. There are things that need to play out," White said. "There are people ahead of him. He put on a good showing tonight and put himself in a good position. He's got some work to do there."
Sterling (19-3) was arguably passed over by Dominick Cruz and Jose Aldo for previous shots at the crown. "Funkmaster" is currently riding a UFC-best five-fight winning streak with notches over Cory Sandhagen, Pedro Munhoz, Jimmie Rivera, Cody Stamann and Brett Johns.
UFC Fight Night: Munhoz vs. Edgar took place at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada on Saturday, August 22. A bantamweight battle between Munhoz and Edgar served as headliner. Stay with Fightful for all your fight night coverage.
