Retired boxing star Floyd Mayweather has recently stated that he is preparing to apply for an MMA license in the near future.
Former UFC Bantamweight Champion Dominick Cruz has some advice for Mayweather if the boxer jumps to MMA, which is to learn takedown defense.
“If Floyd Mayweather can stop everyone in the UFC from taking him down, he has a chance of winning,” Cruz told TMZ Sports. “Six to eight months isn’t gonna be enough. That’s just the way it is, I’m sorry. Because he’s only got two tools. He doesn’t have the other eight. He doesn’t have grappling, he doesn’t have kicks, he doesn’t have knee and elbow strikes. And if he’s lucky, he can learn to defend a takedown in eight months, and that’s just real.”
Mayweather has already rated himself a seven of of ten in his wrestling game, but has yet to speak on takedown defense.
Cruz would go as far as to say that Mayweather shouldn’t focus on anything else MMA related other than takedown defense.
“Focus on your takedown defense, no matter who you’re fighting,” Cruz said. “Don’t worry about nothing else, Floyd Mayweather. Just takedown defense.”
There is no word yet on when Mayweather could make his professional MMA debut, which would arguably be the biggest boxing to MMA crossover in either sports history.
