Former UFC Title Challenger Granted His Release

Many expected the UFC to trim their roster under new management, but the hits keep on coming.

ESPN's Brett Okamoto revealed Thursday night that former interim UFC Bantamweight title challenger Michael McDonald has asked and been granted his release from the company.

McDoanld's future was already uncertain, as he noted in January that he might be on the shelf, as he couldn't afford to train.

“I'm trying to make enough money right now to pay my bills and still have a little savings for a camp,” McDonald told ESPN(link is external). “And it's tough because I don't know if camp will be perfect and I don't know if I'll pay for one, only to have my opponent back out. It's always iffy.”

McDonald last competed in a losing effort to John Lineker last July, but lost two years of his career due to hand injuries.
