Invicta FC Strips Barb Honchak Of Flyweight Title

MMA

Tomorrow night’s Invicta FC 19 card was set to be headlined by an interim flyweight title fight between champion Jennifer Maia and challenger Roxanne Modafferi, but the stakes just got a little bit higher.

Invicta FC officials have announced that flyweight champion barb Honchak has been stripped of her title due to inactivity as champion,  and now Maia and Modafferi will now be fighting for the undisputed flyweight title, not the interim version of the championship as originially planned.

Honchak did defend the belt three times before she was stripped of the title, but she has not competed since November 2014 -- a nearly two-year layoff from the sport. Honchak has yet to issue any kind of statement on the situation, but a mix of personal issues and injuries are what have kept her from defending the championship.

Maia became the interim flyweight champion when she defeated Vanessa Porto by decision at Invicta FC 16, she was set to defend the interim championship for the first time.

Modafferi earned herself a title shot by winning four of five under the Invicta FC banner, with some notable wins coming over Tara LaRosa and current Legacy Fighting Championships Women’s Flyweight Champion Andrea Lee.

Fightful.com will be providing live coverage of Invicta FC 19 on Friday, September 23rd, beginning at 8pm EST.

Invicta FC 19 takes place on Friday, September 23rd from the Scottish Rite Temple in Kansas City, Missouri with Jennifer Maia and Roxanne Modafferi headlining.
