Jairzinho Rozenstruik Wants UFC 249 Bout To Be For Interim Heavyweight Title

MMA

Jairzinho Rozenstruik and Francis Ngannou are scheduled to collide next month in a heavyweight division attraction at UFC 249.

There is no belt on the line when the duo meets at UFC 249, but Rozenstruik believes the UFC should create an interim heavyweight title for their fight.

“My idea for the heavyweight division because of the situation, no disrespect to the champ [Stipe Miocic] and [Daniel] Cormier, but the decision is it’s held up,” Rozenstruik said to MMA Fighting. “My idea was let us fight for an interim title, and I think the heavyweight division needs that. We can move on. When the champ is done, we can go again. That’s my idea.”

If the UFC were to create an interim heavyweight title for that fight, it would be one of two interim title fights on the UFC 249 card.

The coronavirus has been causing a lot of problems for fighters both in and out of the UFC, but there doesn’t seem to be much of an issue for Rozenstruik.

“My training is good. It doesn’t affect my training at all,” Rozenstruik said. “I was ready. I’m ready to fight. We had to slow the pace a little bit but as soon as we had the date, we just squeeze it a little bit up and we’re ready again. Nothing affected my training.”

UFC 249 takes place on Saturday, May 9 from an undisclosed location with Tony Ferguson and Justin Gaethje headlining. Fightful is providing live coverage of the event, with a post-show podcast to follow.
