Kelvin Gastelum is back in action this weekend at UFC 224, facing fellow middleweight Ronaldo Souza in the co-main event of the evening.
Even though Gastelum wants to become middleweight champion, one thing the fighter wants is to go back to the welterweight division.
“I keep winning and eventually I’m going to fight for the title at middleweight, which is crazy,” Gastelum said at a UFC 224 media session. “But yeah, in the back of my head, way in the back, I still have welterweight in mind.”
Gastelum won five of seven fights at welterweight, but has been competing in the middleweight division since UFC 206 in December of 2016.
One huge reason Gastelum wants to go back to 170 pounds is to get another shot at UFC Welterweight Champion Tyron Woodley.
“That fight (first meeting with Woodley at UFC 183) kind of has like a splinter in me, you know? A splinter in my heart,” Gastelum said. “I kind of want to get that fight back, make the weight, make it right, you know? And a lot of people including myself think I won that fight.”
UFC 224 takes place on Saturday, May 12 from the Jeunesse Arena in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil with Amanda Nunes and Raquel Pennington headlining. Fightful is providing live coverage of the event, with a post-show podcast to follow.
