Matt Hughes Calls The UFC Too Commercial

Former UFC Welterweight Champion Matt Hughes is still recovering from a train accident that nearly ended his life earlier this year.

Hughes has been taking a hard look at the promotion that he used to fight for, which the former champion now labels as “too commercial.”

“I think it’s too commercial,” Hughes said on Undeniable With Joe Buck, which was filmed before his recent accident that left him hospitalized. “They’ve got fights darn near every week (on) one of the three channels that they’re on. I think it’s too commercial. They’re so often now, they’re just not as special.”

The former welterweight champion last fought in 2011 and is a member of the UFC Hall Of Fame. When the retired Hughes looks back on his career, the one thing he is grateful for is fighting during the early days of the UFC.

“I am so happy the timing worked out for me where I fought when I did,” Hughes said. “I really think that I fought in the golden age. It was when people got together to watch the UFC.”

Prior to being in the train accident, the former UFC Welterweight Champion had considered a return to the sport. However, that return now looks like it will not be happening due to the aforementioned accident.
