George Lockhart says Max Holloway's weight cut will be challenging.
When Max Holloway was announced as replacing Tony Ferguson in the main event of UFC 223 it was only six days from the fight. Even though he has been in the Featherweight division, Holloway's nutrition expert George Lockhart told Bloody Elbow that Holloway has a really hard weight cut to complete this week.
"Yeah, this is literally tied with the biggest cut I’ve ever done. It’s the exact same number as the biggest cut that I’ve ever done in my life," said Lockhart.
According to Lockhart, Holloway will have had six days to cut the same amount of weight most fighters cut in ten days.
"We usually want to start 10 days out, so this is definitely going to give us some challenges. The flight itself, that 18 hours of flying, is going to have an impact on the amount of water he’s holding. These are things we have to address," said Lockhart. "When most people we’re working with come to fight week, they’ve already done the weight loss and it’s time to just drop the water. With Max we’re doing things a little bit different, and we’re going to have to get a little fat off, though he’s already pretty lean right now," he continued.
Also in the interview, Lockhart discussed Holloway's recent ankle injury and his team working with both Khabib Nurmagomedov and Holloway.
Fightful MMA will have live coverage and a recapping podcast for UFC 223 which includes Nurmagomedov and Holloway.
