Mayweather vs. McGregor Being Considered For Special WBC Title

Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor is not only official, but may actually have title implications.

WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman talked to ESPN and said he and his governing body may consider sanctioning the fight for the organization's rare Diamond Championship.

Dark Side Of The Cage To Premiere In January, Will Cover Ronda Rousey, Matt Hughes, Kimbo Slice, More

"Maybe, I don't know. I'm not against it," Sulaiman said. "Of course this is a WBC board decision but we have to celebrate that boxing is having world attention regardless."

In September 2009, the WBC created its new "Diamond Championship" belt. This belt was created as an honorary championship exclusively to award the winner of a historic fight between two high-profile and elite boxers. The inaugural Diamond Belt was awarded to Manny Pacquiao after his November 2009 win over Miguel Cotto to win his sixth world title. That fight was for the WBO welterweight championship.

The belt has been awarded to a number of fighters at different weight classes. The list of WBC Diamond Champions are:

  • Manny Pacquiao (welterweight)
  • Bernard Hopkins (light heavyweight)
  • Sergio Martinez (middleweight)
  • Canelo Alvarez (middleweight)
  • Floyd Mayweather (light middleweight)
  • Nonito Donaire (super bantamweight)
  • Leo Santa Cruz (featherweight)
  • Jean Pascal (light heavyweight)
  • Sergey Kovalev (light heavyweight)
  • Jorge Linares (lightweight)

Sulaiman predicts Mayweather will win the fight against McGregor, saying that McGregor won't bring anything that can stop Mayweather.

"It's hard to say if it's a mismatch," Sulaiman said. "I personally don't see a way that Mayweather can lose to McGregor because it's in boxing and you are talking about Floyd Mayweather, the greatest tactical fighter who has intelligence and speed. If Mayweather was a confronting head to head fighter, it depends upon the strength and power, and McGregor brings strength and power. But I don't see him bringing boxing ability that counter acts Mayweather."

Mayweather vs. McGregor will take place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on August 26 and will be broadcasted on Showtime pay-per-view.
