Nicco Montano became the first ever UFC Women’s Flyweight Champion when she defeated Roxanne Modafferi at the UFC Ultimate Fighter 26 Finale.
However, the new champion almost missed the bout due to a broken foot she suffered a few weeks before the history making fight.
"The second day after I came home from the show, I broke my foot," said Montano after the event. "Yesterday (day before TUF 26 Finale), my heel was coming off the ground. I thought I wasn't going to be able to fight. You've got to have heart and discipline if you're a fighter. You're going to get hurt. It's (the foot) broken."
Montano had to deal with non-injury related madness before the fight against Modafferi because original opponent Sijara Eubanks was pulled from their fight the day before the event.
Injuries and opponent switches aside, the new champion still cannot believe that she is forever a part of UFC and MMA history.
"It's still kind of unbelievable," she said. "I still haven't looked at the belt. I've been just holding onto it."
Now that Montano is the UFC Women’s Flyweight Champion, the next step is going to be making the first defense of that belt.
