While his name has been thrown around for a title defense against Tony Ferguson, a new report states that Conor McGregor is in talks with the WWE to make an appearance at next year’s WrestleMania in New Orleans.
SunSport says that the current UFC Lightweight champion is in talks for a match against an unnamed opponent.
“SunSport understands that a deal is close with WWE top brass but the match is likely to be delayed until next year — with a possibility of him appearing in April’s Wrestlemania event. A source said: “Conor is a huge wrestling fan. His entire persona on stage he has developed from watching performers like Ric Flair and The Rock”
McGregor has been conflicted in the past when it comes to making a WWE appearance and the WWE in general. In February of last year, he seemed to take a shot at them, calling WWE superstars “messed up pussies”. But he’s seemed to take a much lighter approach to the promotion as of late.
“Never say never” he said during a live interview in Manchester earlier this year. ”I’d love to go into that WWE and have a real knock. Let one of them have a real knock and see what’s what.”
WWE’s Chief Brand Officer Stephanie McMahon recently praised McGregor, saying that he would be a perfect fit for the WWE.
“He certainly has the personality and the athletic ability, the appeal” she told The Mirror in a recent interview. “He speaks his mind, he’s very genuine and authentic, and he has a hell of a Vince McMahon swagger”.
Fightful.com revealed last year that Triple H was interested in bringing McGregor in.
Following his victory against Kevin Lee at UFC 216, Tony Ferguson made it clear that he wants the next shot at Conor McGregor, with Dana White saying that was the next match he had in mind for McGregor. With the WrestleMania rumors starting to creep in, it’s currently unknown if he’ll take the fight before or after the big event in April.
