A super fight is potentially taking place at a yet to be announced Bellator MMA card this September according to Ariel Helwani of ESPN as Bellator Middleweight Champion Gegard Mousasi defends the gold against Bellator Welterweight Champion Rory MacDonald.
Mousasi (44-6-2) is going to be making the first defense of his championship, which the fighter won by defeating Rafael Carvalho at Bellator 200. Mousasi also enters the contest on the strength of a seven fight winning streak and he hasn’t suffered a defeat in almost three years. Mousasi is also known for finishing his fights, with 37 of the champions 44 wins coming by either KO/TKO or submission.
McDonald (20-4-0) would be competing at middleweight for the first time in his professional MMA career, which began in October of 2005. McDonald is the Bellator Welterweight Champion and he won the title by defeating Douglas Lima by unanimous decision at Bellator 192. McDonald had also challenged for the UFC Welterweight Title, losing to then champion Robbie Lawler at UFC 189.
This is the second potentially huge fight set for this September’s Bellator MMA card, as Wanderlei Silva recently revealed that he is facing Rampage Jackson for a fourth time at the event.
The yet to be officially announced September Bellator MMA card takes place on Saturday, September 29 from a location to be determined in San Jose, California with no main event announced at this time. Fightful is providing live coverage of the event, while broadcast plans have yet to be revealed.
