The UFC has a backup plan in case UFC Welterweight Champion Tyron Woodley pulls out of UFC 228 and that plan comes in the form of Kamaru Usman.
ESPN has reported that Usman is going to step in for Woodley if the champion cannot perform his duties this September. It is unknown at this time as to whether or not Usman and Darren Till would battle for an interim strap if Woodley pulls out of the bout or if the fight will go on as a non-title encounter.
This is not the first time that the UFC has implemented such a plan, as Alexander Volkov was set to replace either Stipe Miocic or Daniel Cormier at UFC 226 if either fell out of the bout.
Usman will get all medical tests done ahead of the bout and will also weigh-in the day before the event, much like all the other competitors fighting at the event. Usman is currently ranked #6 in the UFC Welterweight Division Rankings, while Till sits at the #2 spot.
UFC 228 takes place on Saturday, September 8 from the American Airlines Arena in Dallas, Texas with Tyron Woodley and Darren Till headlining. Fightful is providing live coverage of the event, with a post-show podcast to follow.
