A middleweight division attraction has been added to UFC 248 as #1 Robert Whittaker is in action against #4 Jared Cannonier.
The Saturday Telegraph first reported the bout, but its position on the card isn’t known at this time.
Whittaker (20-5-0) is competing for the first time since losing the UFC Middleweight Title to Israel Adesanya at UFC 243. Whittaker hasn’t picked up a victory in over a year, with that last win coming over Yoel Romero at UFC 225. Whittaker is competing in a non-main event bout for the first time in almost three years, with his last non-headlining bout being a victory over Ronaldo Souza at UFC On Fox 24.
Cannonier (13-4-0) enters the contest while in the midst of a three fight winning streak, having defeated David Branch, Anderson Silva and Jack Hermansson. Cannonier has competed at three different weight classes in the UFC, earning an overall record of 6-4-0 in the promotion. Cannonier has picked up thirteen wins as a professional MMA fighter and nine of them have come by way of KO/TKO.
UFC 248 takes place on Saturday, March 7 from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada with no main event announced at this time. Fightful is providing live coverage of the event, with a post-show podcast to follow.
