A welterweight division attraction is going to be headlining the May 23 UFC Fight Night event as former UFC Welterweight Champion #1 Tyron Woodley faces #6 Gilbert Burns.
Ariel Helwani of ESPN first reported the bout, citing a conversation he had with Woodley.
Woodley (19-4-1) is competing for the first time since losing the welterweight title to Kamaru Usman in the co-main event of UFC 235. Woodley is going to be competing for the first time in over a year, as UFC 235 took place in March of last year. Woodley is competing on a “Fight Night” card for the first time in almost six years, with his last such appearance coming at UFC Fight Night Macau.
Burns (18-3-0) has been undefeated since moving up to welterweight, defeating Alexey Kunchenko, Gunnar Nelson and Demian Maia. Burns has competed as a lightweight and welterweight in the UFC, earning an overall record of 11-3-0 in the promotion. Burns has suffered three losses as a professional MMA fighter and all of them came when competing in the UFC.
UFC Fight Night: Woodley vs. Burns takes place on Saturday, May 23 from a location to be announced with Tyron Woodley and Gilbert Burns headlining. Fightful is providing live coverage of the event, which airs live on ESPN.
