The younger brother of Anthony Pettis, Sergio made his MMA debut in 2011. A NAFC Bantamweight Champion, Pettis debuted for the UFC in 2013. He went 9-5 with the UFC, and after winning his last bout with the promotion Pettis decided to test free agency. Making his debut for Bellator in 2020, Pettis went 2-0 and then fought Juan Archuleta for the bantamweight title. At Bellator 258 in May, Pettis won via unanimous decision.

A former kickboxer, Horiguchi made his MMA debut for Shooto in 2010. Horiguchi joined the UFC in 2012 and went on a dominant nine-fight win streak. After losing to Demetrious Johnson for the UFC Flyweight Title, Horiguchi would go 3-0 and decided to also test free agency. Horiguchi would make himself at home with RIZIN, going 13-1 with the promotion.

The first RIZIN Bantamwight Champion, Horiguchi did so by beating former Bellator Bantamweight Champion Darrion Caldwell at RIZIN 14. He then beat Caldwell for the Bellator title at Bellator 222 but had to vacate the belt due to injury. Horiguchi's last bout was a TKO win against Kai Asakura at RIZIN 26, avenging a previous loss and regaining the RIZIN Bantamweight Title. He is now looking to become a double-champion again.
