Last nights latest PBC on FS1 installment featured a couple great stoppage victories, with former Olympian Yordenis Ugas of Cuba stopping heavily favored prospect Bryant Perella in a welterweight clash, while the co-feature saw young Ryan Karl of Houston dominate challenger Jose Felix Quezada over 4 rounds to earn an impressive victory.
Ugas (17-3, 8 KO), a former Olympic bronze medalist, took a 2 year hiatus from the sport after two straight defeats to undefeated prospects in 2014, most notably losing on the scorecards to Amir Imam. However since his return, he has looked incredibly impressive and could be a force within the competitive welterweight division.
The Cuban defector started the fight strong, landing a straight right early in the first round that sent Perella (14-1, 13 KO) flailing to his back side, but the Florida native quickly gathered himself and came back to make the rest of the round competitive. Ugas continued to land hard body shots and consistent counters that were noticeably effecting Perella.
The action escalated in the 4th frame, as Perella finally started showing signs of life, landing combinations and stinging body shots. The firepower from the prospect did not deter the more experienced Ugas, as he landed a beautiful right hook on Bryant Perella's chin that immediately had him tumbling to the ground. The 27 year old Perella beat the count, however he was out on his feet from the moment Ugas continued his assault. An extended flurry of punches, which quite frankly went on about 15 seconds too long, led the referee to step in and wave off the fight with 33 seconds remaining in the fourth.
This fight showed Ugas still has plenty left in the tank and could be a handful for anyone in the division. While he has taken his share of tough defeats to rising contenders, he is finally starting to topple some of the elite prospects, which could line him up for an eliminator bout in the near future.
In the co-feature, welterweights Ryan "Cowboy" Karl and challenger Jose Felix Quezada (11-1, 6 KO) battled for an exciting 4 rounds, however it was apparent early that Karl (13-0, 9 KO) was the much more polished boxer, as he punished his opponent for the entirety of the fight despite an incredible effort put forth by Quezada.
Ryan dropped his foe in the first round with a series of counters and uppercuts, however Quezada managed to come back and make the fight competitive through the second and third rounds. Karl was finding his rhythm again in the fourth when he landed a couple solid shots that sent the challenger into a shell, looking to simply survive. "Cowboy" quickly dropped Quezada with a flurry of right hands towards the end of the fourth. He was able to beat the count, however it was quite obvious he was out on his feet and in no shape to continue. The referee gave him a chance but the corner quickly stepped in and saved their fighter from any more punishment, and rightfully so.
