PBC on FS1 hosted a quartet of exciting fights on Tuesday night, headlined by Super Middleweight prospect Caleb Plant (14-0, 10 KO) making easy work of Colombian challenger Juan De Angel in a wide 10 round decision, taking home the win on scores of 100-89 across the board.
The action came often in the bout, however it was apparent early that Plant was the more polished fighter, beating De Angel to the punch throughout the entirety of the 10-rounder. De Angel (18-5-1, 17 KO) did his best to use lateral foot movement in an attempt to keep Plant away, but the rising contender continued to press forward and applied pressure to his overmatched foe the whole fight.
The action escalated in the 4th round when Plant, fighting out of Nashville, TN, landed two clean left hooks to the chin of his counterpart, sending him flailing to the mat. De Angel was able to beat the count to survive the round, and remained in survival mode for the remainder of the fight, losing almost every round in the last half of the bout.
Plant looked impressive against a lesser opponent, although it was apparent he needs ample time in the gym before being prepared to face the top ranked men in the division. While he showed some pop in his left hand and good head movement, Plant will need to work on his defense and ability to cut off the ring against a more experienced champion.
In the co-feature, Welterweight Kareem Martin (8-1-1, 3 KO) suffered his first professional defeat at the hands of Washington DC native David Grayton, falling victim to a stoppage in the 8th and final round. Martin looked good throughout most of the fight, finding a home for his combinations and work on the inside. As the fight progressed, however, Grayton's body work set in and Martin's output decreased. Grayton (15-1, 11 KO) dropped his foe in the 8th with a hard right to put him in obvious trouble. Once Martin rose to his feet, he was met with a barrage of punches that forced the referee to step in to avoid further damage.
Two other exciting fights also took place on the telecast, making it a full evening of exciting boxing. To open the show with a bang, Light Heavyweight prospect Carlos Gongora (6-0, 5 KO) scored a devastating first round knockout of rival Ronald Mixon (7-1, 6 KO). After a plethora of trash talk leading up to the fight, the action started off slow, but all it took was two punch combination that landed cleanly on the chin of Mixon, leaving him failing in an attempt to get his legs to hold up the rest of his body, giving Gongora a KO1. Hard hitting Heavyweight Wesley Triplett (4-1) also stopped Eric Newell (8-4-3) when he landed a shot in the third round that shattered the jaw of Newell, causing the bout to be halted before the start of the 4th frame.
