Ronaldo Souza May Return To Middleweight

Ronaldo Souza made his UFC Light Heavyweight Division debut in the main event of UFC Fight Night Sao Paulo, suffering a split decision loss to Jan Blachowicz.

It may be one and done for Souza at light heavyweight, who is already pondering a return to 185 pounds.

“My manager and my team are talking which weight class I’ll fight next, so there’s a lot going on here right now,” Souza said to MMA Fighting. “We’ll make a decision really soon on what’s best for us. We’re looking at staying at 205 or going back to 185.”

Souza has had a lot of success as a middleweight both inside and outside of the UFC, having previously captured the Strikeforce Middleweight Title.

The Brazilian also knows that the performance at UFC Sao Paulo could’ve been better if he weren't hampered with an illness heading into the bout.

“I started coughing a month before the fight and couldn’t sleep,” Souza said. “I could barely train, I couldn’t breathe. It was awful. The doctor in the U.S. treated it as an allergy, but one day I called with my doctor in Brazil, Dr. Rodrigo Mauro, and he asked for exams that showed it was f*cking pertussis.”

There is no word yet as to when Souza will return to action, but the fighter is in the midst of a two fight losing streak.
