Roxanne Modafferi Wants Stiffer Penalties Against Fighters Who Miss Weight

MMA

Roxanne Modafferi has spent fifteen plus years competing as a professional MMA fighter, competing everywhere from Strikeforce to Invicta FC to the UFC.

When it comes to fighters missing weight for their bouts, a frustrated Modafferi believes that those who come in overweight have advantages over their opponent.

“I think that 20 percent is money, but it doesn’t affect the actual fight, so when a fighter that misses weight comes in rehydrated, they’re stronger and heavier than the other fighter, and the fighter who actually missed weight has an advantage over the fighter who made weight,” Modafferi told MMA Junkie. “I feel like it’s an unfair advantage over the person that did their job, so therefore there should be some kind of consequence in the actual fight to even it up a little bit.”

The current penalty is for fighters who miss weight to get a 20% fine from their fight purse, which goes to their opponent.

Modafferi would like to see fighters who miss weight for fights get deducted a point on fight night, maybe event two points.

“I think that’s fair – or fair-ish,” Modafferi said. “As much penalty is allowed, I think would be great, so if it can go to two points (for a bad miss), great, but I’m just going to start out asking for one point.”

Cynthia Calvillo was the latest fighter to miss weight and that took place at UFC Fight Night Buenos Aires, as she missed weight by 2 pounds in a strawweight division encounter.
