Stephen Thompson headlined UFC Fight Night Liverpool, suffering a unanimous decision loss to Darren Till.
The welterweight star didn’t just suffer a defeat at the event, but Thompson also injured his knee during the fight.
“It was almost like this dude was trying to put me out,” Thompson said on The MMA Hour. “He hit me in the knee and after that my movement was pretty much out the window. I was more focused on keeping my knee — it was just another thing to think about out there.”
Thompson has had surgery on his knee before, it is unknown if the latest injury will require him to go under the knife again.
After the second round concluded, one major goal Thompson has what to keep his knee from sustaining any more damage.
“It was more trying to keep my leg from collapsing than anything,” he said. “It just really felt unstable in that fifth round. I was trying to hit the guy hard, I really was. I just was unable to put myself in a situation to do so.”
Till became just the third fighter to hand Thompson a defeat in his professional MMA career, with the other two being UFC Welterweight Champion Tyron Woodley and Matt Brown.
