Thiago Alves is competing against Mike Perry in the co-main event of this weekend’s UFC Fight Night Pittsburgh event.
Hurricane Irma has made landfall in the state of Florida, where Alves resides, and the fighter has decided not to leave the state early with the imminent threat incoming.
“(The hurricane) is going west, so things are getting better,” Alves told MMA Fighting. “We'll wait and see. I'll stay with the family here. When it’s over, I’ll go to war.”
The hurricane has now hit Florida and until it passes, there is no way to estimate just what damage has been done or how it could affect travel in and out of the state.
Alves has taken the proper steps to ensure his families safety, but like everybody else who’ll be affected by the hurricane, will have to wait and see what the future holds.
“I have built in shutters at home and I have a generator as well for when the power goes down, and plenty of fuel to use,” Alves said. “It's just wait and see. We have lots of water and food. We will just wait."
UFC Fight Night Pittsburgh takes place on Saturday, September 16 from the PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania with Luke Rockhold and David Branch headlining. Fightful is providing live coverage of the event, which airs live on Fox Sports 1.
