Former UFC title challenger Yoel Romero has been forced to withdraw from his upcoming main event matchup with Anthony "Rumble" Johnson at Bellator 258 on May 7.
The unfortunate news was first reported by CBSSports' Brian Campbell who spoke with Bellator officials who confirmed Romero's removal from the Bellator Light Heavyweight World Grand Prix. The 44-year old who signed with the promotion back in December of last year failed his pre-fight medical testing and was forced to withdraw from the tournament because of it. The extent of Romero's medical issues wasn't disclosed but Bellator is going to try to find an alternate to fight Johnson and released the following statement about their hopes to reschedule the highly anticipated fight with Romero down the line.
"Romero will become eligible to reapply for clearance to compete in the coming months, and we look forward to seeing him make his Bellator debut in the near future. Bellator MMA will look to reschedule the highly anticipated Johnson versus Romero matchup at a future date."
