MTDAR & CABMMA Pass New Weight Cutting Regulations

Following in the footsteps of the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC), both the Mohegan Tribe Department Of Athletic Regulation (MTDAR) and the Brazilian MMA Athletic Commission (CABMMA) have passed new weight cutting regulations.

The CABMMA has passed all the measures from the CSAC 10 point weight cutting plan and they took effect this past weekend at UFC Fight Night Belem. The effect of that move can already be felt by Michel Prazeres, who came in overweight for his lightweight division bout against Desmond Green and will have to compete at welterweight in his next Octagon appearance.

Speaking of the CSAC 10 point weight cutting plan, a partial list of the plan was adopted by the MTDAR. The MTDAR will also add additional weight classes and earlier weigh-ins, all of which will take full effect at Bellator 194.

Besides the new regulations passed by both commissions, additional dehydration tests will get performed on fighters by the MTDAR.

MTDAR director Mike Mazzulli spoke with MMA Fighting about the new measures:

“Over the years, I have spoken to numerous fighters and they told me the worst thing about the sport is not the fight night, but the weight cut and weigh-in. The industry must do something to change the culture, and this is one step to assist in the matter. I can only hope that many other tribal and state commissions come aboard in an effort to make combative sports safer.”

There is no word at this time as to which other athletic commissions will adopt or change their weight cutting rules.
