Chris Jericho’s idea of a match no one thought they’d ever see led him to Kenny Omega.
Dave Meltzer on last night’s Wrestling Observer Radio gave a report on how the big match between Chris Jericho and Kenny Omega went down. Apparently, it all came from a famed fight from earlier this year.
Meltzer noted that Chris Jericho came up with the idea when seeing the build toward Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather, which took place a few months ago in August. He wondered how he could promote and build something like that, and figured out that it had to be something no one would expect. That lead him to thinking about a match between him Kenny Omega. He went to Don Callis, who pitched it to Kenny Omega, then to Gedo, who actually used to team with Jericho at one point in the nineties in Japan..
They had meetings in New York where they negotiated for several weeks until they agreed to terms.

Jericho shocked the world by appearing at Power Struggle following Kenny Omega successfully defending the United States championship against Trent Baretta. A video emerged as Kenny Omega was saying his catchphrase, with Jericho appearing. He said he was the Alpha of pro wrestling, and wanted to prove that he was the best in the world, so he was challenging Omega to a match at the Tokyo Dome.
