Former UFC fighter Rory MacDonald made a successful promotional debut at Bellator 179, when he submitted Paul Daley with a rear naked choke.
The Canadian is going to be fighting for the Bellator MMA Welterweight Title later this year, but he also wants to hold middleweight gold as well.
"I'd like to fight for the middleweight title maybe at the end of the year if there is a big card we can promote and get me and the middleweight champion on there," MacDonald said on The MMA Hour.
MacDonald did challenge for the UFC Welterweight Title, but came up short against then champion Robbie Lawler.
Just because the Canadian wants the middleweight title doesn’t mean that he has lost focus on becoming the welterweight champion.
"Obviously, I am not looking past the welterweight championship fight, I'm just saying if everything goes as planned. An end of the year show for the middleweight title would be fantastic,” says MacDonald.
Bellator MMA has had only one two division champion before in Joe Warren (who held the featherweight & bantamweight titles), but unlike Conor McGregor and the UFC, the promotion has never had a fighter hold two titles in two different weight classes at the exact same time.
