Bellator MMA President Scott Coker has held tournaments before, with the most notable being the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix that was won by Daniel Cormier.
The promotion has already held a light heavyweight tournament under Coker and now the heavyweights may be up next.
“I think we will have some more fights, see how these guys fare, and then we can talk about something like that (a heavyweight tournament),” Coker told MMA Junkie.
While there are a lot of big names in the promotion’s heavyweight division, there currently isn’t a champion in that division.
That is a problem that Coker is looking to solve in early 2018, but the tournament won’t be used for that purpose.
“I’d like to crown a heavyweight champ in the first part of (2018),” Coker said.
Vitaly Minakov was the last Bellator MMA Heavyweight Champion and he was stripped of the title in May of 2016 after the promotion said he failed to defend the title in a proper amount of time.
There are currently lots of big name fighters in the promotion’s heavyweight division, including Fedor Emelianenko, Sergei Kharitonov, UFC veteran Cheick Kongo, Bobby Lashley, former UFC Heavyweight Champion Frank Mir, TUF alumni Matt Mitrione, UFC veteran Roy Nelson and UFC veteran Justin Wren.
