In the co-main event of one of the first ever UFC card in Madison Square Garden, and one of the most stacked cards in UFC history, Tyron Woodley retained his UFC welterweight championship over Stephen Thompson via majority draw at UFC 205.
Woodley and Thompson tied in 2 of the 3 judges' scorecards (47-47, 47-47) while Woodley won in the third scorecard (48-47). The official announcement took a while to be made and ring announcer Bruce Buffer incorrectly said that Woodley originally won via split decision before making the correction soon after.
Woodley may have retained the belt, but Thompson made Woodley work for that belt. Thompson faced some trouble towards the end of the first round when he took a short elbow from Woodley that produced a cut on his nose. Woodley dropped Thompson multiple times in the 4th round and even had a guillotine choke locked on for about a minute and Thompson held on, much to the surprise of the announcers and audience at Madison Square Garden.
The draw snapped Thompson's 7-fight win streak that dated all the way back to 2013 and Woodley walked out of the octagon as champion, but not the victor. UFC 205 was Woodley's first defense since winning the belt off of Robbie Lawler at UFC 201 earlier this year in July.
