Wade Barrett Says The Nexus Was Supposed To Win At SummerSlam 2010

Wade Barrett still thinks The Nexus should have won.

At WWE SummerSlam 2010, a group of "rookies" called "The Nexus" were set to face off in an elimination match against a team headed by John Cena. In the end, Cena eliminated the last two members of The Nexus on his own and won the match for Team WWE. In an interview with Inside The Ropes, former WWE wrestler Wade Barrett said The Nexus was originally planned to win.

"Not only did we think we were going to win because it was really the first test of this killer group we had. This is the first time time we're put to the test against these top WWE Superstars...we can't lose this because we've got a ton of heat and attention," said Barrett. "We were told a week before hand by one of the agents... 'yeah, you guys are going to be winning'"  he added.

Barrett claimed that on the day of the event, some of the wrestlers on the other team still thought The Nexus was going to win but soon after arriving The Nexus was told Team WWE would be winning.

According to Barrett, he and some other members of The Nexus hunted down Vince McMahon for an hour until they finally found him in his office. There they told McMahon why they thought The Nexus should win and McMahon told them why the contrary would be happening.

"Vince (McMahon) looked me in the eye and told me 'the reason we're doing this is because SummerSlam needs to have a happy ending,'...we wanted the kids to go home happy, there's not much we can do at that point," said Barrett.

The answer McMahon gave Barrett was not satisfactory but he said he had to do what McMahon wanted. He speculated that no wrestler would think having Cena win at that point was a good idea.

Wade Barrett has been out of WWE since early 2016, he has not wrestled since then but said recently he would be returning to the ring soon.
