Apollo Crews was scheduled to defend his United States Title against MVP at WWE Extreme Rules. Unfortunately, the bout didn't happen as Crews was not medically cleared to compete.
The announcers explained that Crews showed up to Performance Center ready to defend his title, but because he wasn't cleared due to a bulging disc injury, he wasn't allowed in the building. Crews was put on the shelf a month ago by Bobby Lashley, who locked him in a full nelson.
As a result of Crews not being able to compete, MVP declared himself the new United States Champion.

MVP previously declared himself the US Champion on the July 6 WWE Raw when he introduced a newly designed US Title.
The announcers did not recognize MVP as the official US Champion and Crews doesn't either.
@The305MVP is trippin thinking he can claim himself the #USChampion. I was looking forward to shutting you BOTH up once and for all tonight at #ExtremeRules but once I’m cleared .. #ImComingforwhatsmine
