According to PWInsider, Grimes underwent surgery last week. The Wrestling Observer notes the surgery is "believed to be arthroscopic knee surgery."

Grimes is coming off a loss to Tommaso Ciampa on the December 9 episode of NXT. Following the match, Timothy Thatcher attacked Grimes and Grimes was listed on the NXT Injury Report two days later. At the time, NXT did not give a timetable for Grimes’ return.

Grimes competed back at NXT TakeOver: WarGames on December 6 when he lost a strap match to Dexter Lumis. Prior to the strap match, Grimes was in a Blindfold Match and a Haunted House of Terror Match against Lumis, neither of which Lumis was able to come out on top.
