Evan Husney discusses how he feels about wrestling fans introducing their loved ones to Dark Side of the Ring.
Dark Side of the Ring tells plenty of stories about the bleaker side of wrestling, but sometimes, that provides the perfect open door for new wrestling fans to be made through the series.
Speaking with Sean Ross Sapp, series producer Evan Husney spoke about enjoying when people use the series to introduce loved ones to the world of professional wrestling and how that's a fun part of the recipe for the VICE series.
"It happens and that's my favorite thing is when somebody is exposing their partner, loved one, sibling, father, uncle, aunt, whatever to this crazy world that has nothing to do with it," he began. "But they're down for it and they're like, ‘This is nuts.’ I love it because I hope that our show doesn't—I think some people have a perception that it plays like a cautionary expose, like look at this. Like John Stossel's kind of 2020 piece on wrestling—‘We're exposing the secrets and then look how like, you know, effed up this all is.’ It's not. We love it, and I hope that passion for the fact that we're fans of this and have grown up loving it comes through, despite if the story has a tragic piece to it or has a controversial aspect to it. Like, we still love this business and are obsessed with it.
"But wrestling has been guarded for so long, and it's been hard to separate fact from fiction. We want to know the real stories just like all the fans do and why there's a whole industry around that concept, right?"
