Chris Jericho Was To Face Hiroshi Tanahashi At MSG, Tony Khan And Vince McMahon Asked Him Not To

In 2019, New Japan Pro Wrestling and Ring of Honor came together for G1 Supercard during WrestleMania weekend at Madison Square Garden.

The show was monumental as it was the first time a non-McMahon promotion had run MSG since 1960. The show sold out with an announced attendance of 16,534.

When tickets went on sale, many fans were expecting Cody Rhodes, Kenny Omega, and The Young Bucks as they were part of NJPW and ROH at that time, but they left at the end of the year to form AEW.

Chris Jericho was also part of the AEW formation, and while he may not have been expected for the MSG show, he says he was in the plans to compete.

"I was actually going to do it against Tanahashi and then both Tony Khan and Vince McMahon asked me not to do it," said Jericho when discussing the G1 Supercard show on Talk Is Jericho.

Tanahashi ended up facing Zack Sabre Jr at G1 Supercard.

Tanahashi and Jericho would finally face off at Wrestle Kingdom 14 in 2020 with Jericho picking up the victory.
