CM Punk Announces That He Has A Broken Foot, Interim AEW Champion To Be Crowned At Forbidden Door

CM Punk has delivered some unfortunate news.

Ahead of the June 3 episode of AEW Rampage, CM Punk took to Twitter to share that he'd be making an important announcement about the AEW World Championship and his career during tonight's broadcast.

Fightful Select reported that Punk had been heard backstage on Wednesday complaining about his foot, though it was unclear if the aforementioned announcement was related or not.

Punk won the AEW World Title from Hangman Page at Double or Nothing and then competed in a Trios Match the following Wednesday on Dynamite. At one point during the match, he slipped attempting to springboard off the top rope and seemed to be limping after that spot.

Punk came to the ring and said that every bone in his body told him to go home and not come out today. He stayed though because he made a promise to give it his all until the wheels fell off. He added that he has loved every single second he's been in the ring and that his comeback has been a gift he never thought he could experience.

He then shared that he is injured and needs surgery. Punk added that a couple of things are broken, the biggest of which is his heart. The good news, however, is that he can still go on a run. The wheels are still there, one happens to be broken. This is a bump in the road and promises that he will be back.

CM Punk then said that doesn't want to hold AEW up and that there is a long list of people who can fill his shoes. He told Tony Khan that he would relinquish the title but said that Tony believes this is just a bump in the road, which is something he admits to needing to hear. Punk promises not to let doubt creep in and ruin anything. He concluded by saying that the get-back will be bigger than the setback.

An interim champion is set to be crowned at AEW x NJPW: Forbidden Door. A battle royale will kick off the upcoming episode of Dynamite with the winner facing Jon Moxley in the main event for a shot at moving onto the title match at the June 26 event.
