An early criticism, before AEW ran its first show, was that there would be too many cooks in the kitchen. AEW has four Executive Vice Presidents; Cody, The Young Bucks, and Kenny Omega, which means four different visions on wrestling to blend into one show. Plus, the overall vision of AEW President Tony Khan.
And while there have been some hiccups, the more majority of AEW shows have been well-received by fans.
"Whenever there's a dip, maybe a rating dipped slightly or a segment that wasn't particularly a home run, that's always one of the criticisms. 'You gotta have one vision! You gotta get [Vince] Russo!' It's fun when they come in," Cody said on AEW Unrestricted. "The reason it's like this in the first place is because it wasn't about one vision. The wrestling fan is not coming all looking for the same person or moment. Their views are different so the creative process is not as difficult as people think. Matt, Nick, Kenny, myself, and Tony, it's like a band. Everyone plays a different instrument. Everyone thinks they're the lead singer. But if someone brings a song, you do everything you can...it may not be from your heart and soul, but you wanna see their process on it and support their process. That's the process of AEW."
He continued, discussing the different visions between the four men.
"Matt & Nick are very meta, fourth-wall poking, Deadpool in pro wrestling. Kenny very much in his roots in Japan and the Joshi heartbeat and strong style heartbeat and long stretch of a match and what you can tell. Me, it's old school southern wrestling. Matched with Tony, who manages to like everything."
During a recent media call, Cody discussed the creative structure in AEW and talked about those who chip in while backstage. You can find his full comments by clicking here.
Cody is set to face MJF at AEW Revolution. Fightful will have live coverage of the event beginning at 7 p.m. ET.
